Unpaid Work versus Commodification. Towards a division of responsibilities between Home, market and State
Abstract
The article deals with the lack of consideration of unpaid work in economics and the need to revise that invisibility with respect to the current job diversity and to the contribution of the domestic sector to wealth and welfare. The distribution of the total amount of work shows the unbalance between paid and unpaid work in relation to gender and, consequently, the unequal income participation of men and women. The quantification of unpaid work in terms of time and monetary cost, as GIP percentage, does not mean mercatilisation of that work but a way of valuing it socially. We do not speak of salarisation but of a share of responsabilities between the families, the market and the State.Downloads
