Guide for authors
MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION
Manuscript submission should be done via the "Make a Submission" link in the right sidebar or the "Submissions" tab in the menu bar.
Before submitting a manuscript, it is necessary to prepare several documents in order to upload the individual files to the submission platform correctly.
As a general rule, the length of the manuscript, including text and equivalent space for figures and tables, should not exceed 20 pages. One page of the RSGE template (in Times New Roman 10 font, single-spaced) is equivalent to approximately 1000 words.
1. MAIN TEXT
The text will be prepared following the RSGE template for manuscripts in Spanish or English (download from the side bar of the website), according to the language of the main text. In both cases, they should be organized as follow:
- TITLE in English or Spanish (according to the main text) and Title in Spanish or English.
- Name and surnames of authors.
- Full postal and electronic addresses of authors.
- Abstract in English, not exceeding 200 words in the language of the main text, and Resumen in Spanish, no more than 400 words in the second language.
- Keywords/Palabras clave (3 to 5, in English and Spanish).
- SHORT TITTLE to use as header, in the language of the main text.
- Main text of the manuscript. Headings should be hierarchically sorted into three types without any numbering: Section, First-order subsection and Second-order subsection, with dot and followed by the text. In the main text, cite only published or in press publications. Any cited publications should be referred to the authors’ surname and year of publication, arranged chronologically (e.g., Pérez, 2004; Mateos and Jiménez, 2007; Teixell et al., 2007). The figures and tables must be sequential (e.g., Fig. 1, Fig. 2, Figs. 3-5, Table 1, Table 2… etc.).
- Acknowledgements and funding. Personal acknowledgements and those to the persons who have reviewed the work will be cited. In addition, it is necessary to indicate the funding sources of the study.
- Author contributions. The individual contributions of each author must be provided in a short paragraph.
- References. The list of references should be arranged alphabetically by authors' surnames and chronologically in case of repetition. References with a DOI should be indicated with a link such as https://doi.org/... (see examples below). To search for the DOI of a paper you can use the following Crossref URL https://apps.crossref.org/SimpleTextQuery.
- Figure and table captions. In English if the main text is in English.

3. FIGURES AND TABLES
Figures and tables will be sent in individual files (they will NOT be included in the main text), so it will be necessary to prepare them properly before uploading them to the submission platform. The design of tables and figures (including drawings and photographs) will take into account the box size of the journal (248 x 170 mm). Figures and tables can occupy the width of a column (82 mm) or a page (170 mm).
Tables should be in DOC format. The font size should be at least 7 pt. and the line width should be between 0.3 and 1.5 pt.
Figures should be in JPG or TIFF format (if TIFF format is used and the figure contains only line drawings, the resolution should be 600 dpi, if the figure has a grey screen or is in colour, the resolution should be 300 dpi). Parts of a figure should be denoted by capital letters (A, B, C, etc.). Drawings should be of good quality in terms of raster, shades of grey and captions. Photographs should be clearly visible, have sufficient contrast and glossy finish, and should contain scales or objects for reference.
MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION
The submission of all papers should be done through the link "Make a new submission", located at the top of the Submissions page. You can follow the detailed steps in the following guide: Instructions for article submission (download from the side bar of the website).
REGISTRATION. To submit a new manuscript, the corresponding author must register in the RECYT management platform, if he/she is not already registered. Once registered, you can enter the platform, where you must complete all the requested data, including metadata, before finalizing the submission of the manuscript. Failure to do so properly may result in the paper being rejected by the Editors for resubmission so that all data can be filled in correctly. In addition, you must upload the following files:
- A file in Word format (text editor) with the main text of the manuscript following the RSGE template (download from the side bar of the website). It is IMPORTANT to fill in all the data on the first page of the template, including a list of five possible persons to review the work (full name, email address and institution to which they belong), for the correct management of the work. When justified, opposed reviewers can be named.
- A separate file for each figure or table, numbered consecutively.
EDITORIAL PROTOCOL AND PAPER PUBLICATION
During the manuscript submission process, authors will be asked to declare that the data submitted are original and have not been previously published. As indicated above, authors should propose five scientific reviewers. For the acceptance of the manuscript submission, the publication guidelines included in this guide for authors should be followed.
It is important to follow the publication ethics guide, which can be consulted in the following link of the journal: https://recyt.fecyt.es/index.php/RevSocGeoEsp/guiadebuenaspracticas
The Editorial Committee will assess the suitability of the manuscript to the rules of publication and if the contents are in accordance with the editorial line of the journal. In accordance with the peer review process, if the paper conforms to the standards, it will be sent for review to 2 specialists in the subject of the manuscript and, in case of discrepancy, it will be sent to a third person who, if necessary, will be one of the members of the Scientific Committee. These persons will be anonymous, unless they indicate otherwise during the review process. Each year, a list of the persons who have reviewed the papers and the institution of those who have chosen to remain anonymous will be published in the issue of the second half of the year.
Once the reports of the reviewers are available, the Editor-in-Chief will issue a first decision on the manuscript, indicating whether the paper is accepted or requires minor, moderate or major modifications, or whether it is rejected. If accepted with modifications, the original manuscript must be corrected following the reviewers' comments, which will be available to authors in the submission navigation menu.
The authors of the manuscript will have 15 days to make the appropriate modifications and justify, by means of a mandatory report, the changes introduced in the manuscript and the possible discrepancies with the opinions expressed by the persons who have reviewed the work. Once these documents have been assessed, the Editor-in-Chief will decide whether the new version of the paper needs a second revision or whether it can be definitively accepted.
Once the paper has been definitively accepted, the corresponding author will receive a proof for correction through the RECYT platform. Authors will have a period of 7 days to return the proofs with any comments they deem appropriate regarding any possible formal modifications they may have detected.
When the review and editing of all the articles has been completed, the final volume will be published online in open access, in June and December, in the web of the Revista de la Sociedad Geológica de España (https://recyt.fecyt.es/index.php/RevSocGeoEsp/index) and in the web of the Sociedad Geológica de España (https://sociedadgeologica.org/publicaciones/revista-sge/), under the Creative Commons CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license.
