Abstract

Saldanha’s military revolt in 1851 and O’Donell’s in 1854 changed the developmental course of Spanish and Portuguese Liberalism. Both movements attempted to modernise the prevailing political structure and put an end to the instability largely produced by revolutionary movements and consistent recourse to the army. The roles played by the political parties, the military revolts and the crown were decisive in the final outcome: the success of the Regeneraçao and the failure of the Liberal Union party’s attempted reconciliation.
