Abstract

The aim of this paper is to approach the principle of interterritorial solidarity by means of a comparative study of its legal, doctrinal and case law configuration. In doing so, the objective is to highlight the importance of articulating the principle in an effective way in supranational integrations. To this end, it analyses how the principle has been shaped in the main integrations of the five continents. It also argues for the need to articulate it in its economic manifestation in order to cope with the onslaught of globalization. Finally, it elucidates why solidarity mechanisms have only been successfully implemented in the European Union.
