Abstract

The recent literature dealing with the political effects of the economic shock of 2008-2009 has shown that the economic crisis in capitalist advanced societies has also been a democratic and political crisis. This paper examines the literature of comparative politics which has explored the dynamics of political change activated since the start of the Great Recession, to identify the main sources of political transformation in advanced capitalist democracies. The key findings of this research indicate that the economic crisis of 2008-2009 has woven a complex net of causes and consequences that are transforming politics, as it involves a number of challenges that governments of advanced capitalist democracies find very difficult to deal with.
