Abstract

The Canovas Restoration can be considered as the peak of the Spanish liberal state. It was characterized by the alternation between conservative and liberal parties, although the latter had the major role in its political and administrative structure, at least during the Regency of María Cristina (1885-1902). In opposition to traditional ideas about Restoration as a period of stagnation, the liberals displayed a reformist vocation. They were enhanced by their encounter with the political models of the United Kingdom and France, but also the experience of other countries such as Italy, Germany and Belgium. Likewise, this openness was used as a strategy for achieving legitimacy, evincing the efforts of the party to forge the inclusion of the country in a modernity identified with Europe.
