Abstract

In the field of literary criticism, there is a well-established tradition in which studies that are highly developed (in both empirical and theoretical terms) consider the genesis of literary works. The central interest here is: how does an author create his literary work? Using this model as a guide, a similar question is addressed here: how did Eric Voegelin create his work? The principal topic of the following inquiry is Voegelin’s workshop. On the basis of empirical data, this workshop is presented («reconstructed») in detail. Its creative function in the genesis of Voegelin’s work is then indicated. Finally, a few paradigmatic examples enable us to take a direct «look» into Voegelin's creative activity and render a reading of his works transparent to the creative work of which they speak.
