Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the questions raised by the integration of higher music education into Bologna Process. It also aims to consider the character of higher music education centres in Spain, where there appears to be a certain «anomaly», due to the fact that whilst they offer a qualification equivalent to a university degree, though these institutions are organized and regulated by non-university legislation. In other European countries there are both music degrees offered by universities and specialist university sector colleges. In Spain the current system set out by the Educational Law leaves no doubt as to the position of music outside the University. Regardless of their position in the Spanish education system, the main issue facing higher music education centres is whether they are going to be given the same academic, operational and financial freedom given to the universities.
