Abstract

This study addresses the urban toponymy system under Spanish Law, a subject usually studied by other sciences, thus overlooking its legal aspects. Both its evolution throughout history and current state and regional legislation are studied. Among the subjects addressed by this study are city naming regulations, how this nomenclature comes about, name registration and standardization (particularly linguistic standardization, within the context of a system where several official languages coexist), and the name adaptation process. Furthermore, public street names and signs are studied, as well as the established limits to local jurisdiction in this matter. Finally, the study covers the regulations regarding the protection and usage of place names.
