Abstract

This article aims to analyse the evolution of socialism in Madrid during the first two decades of the 20th century, assessing the progressive role played by local issues in its discourses and practices. On the basis of a process that showed parallels with what happened in Europe, we will deep into the growth that the political formation noticed in a specific field: the one that coincided with the calls that were established with the elections at a local level. Through the study of local elections records, minutes of the plenary sessions held in the Madrid City Council and internal documents of Socialist Party, we will explain the factors that, mainly linked to political activism in the urban framework, contributed to turning the Socialists into the hegemonic force of the left-wing, relegating Republicanism to a secondary position.
