Abstract

The paper assesses the impact of corruption scandals on Spaniards' the general election of 1996. After reviewing the literature on this topic and posing the conditions for a scandal to have impact on the vote (sections 1 and 2), our analysis proceeds in three steps (sections 3, 4 and 5). Fors, some survey data on the importance of political corruption vis-a-vis other problems of the Spanish society are presented. Second, we focus on the relationship between the opinions about corruption and the actual voting behavior, taking into account the effects of other factors. Finally, we use our data to test whether it is possible or not to distinguish between different groups of voters in terms of their patterns of reaction to corruption scandals.
