Abstract

The affair MATESA took place in 1969 when the newspapers reported that a well-known businessman had been jailed and that his firm had a debt of 10.000 millions pesetas with a state bank. It was a very exceptional case in the history of francoism because the media dealt freely with the affair for a couple of months and the Cortes created a committee wich made a very hard report for three former ministers (and a fourth one still active), who were prosccuted by the Supreme Court later on (except for the still current minister). The paper analyses how could this deeds be dealt publicly (for a limited period of time) in the dictatorship and makes some reflections on the similarities and differences between this case and the scandals that take place in democratic regimes.
