Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyze the three most outstanding moments in the historical output about Spanish Federalism. The republicans' visión of their own time and political fights in the middle of the 19th Century forms the basis from which a historio-graphic look emerged in the 1960s and 1970s. This historiography revealed the triple side of Federalism in Spain: cultural, social and institutional. Nowadays, studies of Federalism go through a significant re-newal that arises from insatisfactory explanations about the emer-gence of liberal society, as well as the malaise that the «State of Autonomies» provokes in certain of these autonomous regions.
