Abstract

The Portuguese Dictatorship was overthrown by the Mouement of the Armed Forces (MFA), which thereby committed itself to the country's democratisation. For two years, the Army was one of the chief actors of the political process, being stricken by división and forced to behave in a way it was not supposed to. This article tells how the Military was divided by politics, evaluating the role of its factions both in initially radicalising and in finally moderating the political process.
