Abstract

This article attempts to confront two interpretative models on the birth of nations and nationalism: the modernist paradigm (Gellner, Hobsbawm, Anderson, Mann), and the one that may be called «progressive paradigm» (Armstrong, Smith, Llobera, Hastings). The comparison will focus on the formation of Portuguese natio-nal identity from the late Middle Ages on. The article concludes by proclaiming the existence of a Portuguese identity —however pro-blematic— prior to the classic age of nationalism, thus validating the progressive approach in the present case.
