Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyse the part played by the French extreme right during the Spanish Civil War. In 1937-1938 the OSARN or «Cagoule» tried to set up a French battalion —the «Bandera Joan of Are». It was supposed to back Franco. However, it was engaged in arm-dealing, terrorist attacks, acts of sabotage and the gathering of military information. The French government used this network to establish diplomatic relations with Franco's government. The aggressive policy of Germany's Nazi government made it indeed necessary for the French to forge an alliance with the Spanish Nationalists. It is thought that less than 500 French-men out of the 2,000 who were fighting with the Nationalists joi-ned the «Bandera». Nevertheless, this organization managed to re-ach its aim: in March 1939 the French government recognized Franco's regime.
