Abstract

The first thirty years of the 20th Century were for Spain an intelectual golden age. Together, three exceptional generations —those of 1898, 1914 and 1927— brought the country up to the level of European culture. This essay reviews the role played by econo-mists in this extraordinary event. In their specific domain, profes-sionals of Economics joined the social and natural scientists who demanded —in parliament as well as on the Press— the europea-nization of Spain, the reform of its institutions, and the progress of its education and culture. The article shows the way in which Spa-nish economists of all three generations added to the climate of in-tellectual euphoria, and reviews their main contributions to the study of Spanish economy.
