Abstract

This article is an attempt to analyse the role played by the pro-fessors at universidad de Oviedo within the intellectuals at the be-ginning of the twentieth century. It deals with their philosophical background (krausism), with the University as an institution with a significant role, one that goes further than science and reaches the whole society, and with the special concern about public opinión and the need for culture, for education, deeply rooted in Spanish society at that time. This group of intellectuals tried to have an influence on those who, at the same time, were forming public opinión. It also deals with the extent to which these intellectuals considered politi-cal action as the only way (as a must, in fact) to achieve their ideáis. A policy that should be, above all, social policy. In doing so, the Oviedo group gained for University professors a prestigious place not only in society but also amongst the intellectuals.
