Abstract

1989 was the year of freedom for the Polish Catholic press, which subsequently took a firm stand on the question of Polish entry into the European Union. This position was primarily influen-ced by the historical implications of the event, Le., the memories of a nation invaded by Germany and Russia. The Catholic press ex-pressed its fears of Poland's eventual loss of sovereignty, creating an atmosphere of mistrust towards anything new. Referring to Nazi and Soviet oppression, it warned against the possibility of submis-sion to a new despot, represented this time by the European Union.
