Abstract

The present article examines the context in which the Armenian Genocide occurred. It mainly focuses on the attempt of the Armenian minority then living in Turkey to make transition from a di-sadvantaged minority into a status of equal rights with the domi-nant majority. This desire was stimulated by a climate of reform within the Ottoman Empire and a supportive international climate. These efforts by the Armenians had a harsh welcome by the Ottoman authorities. Ottoman suspicion of European Powers encoura-ging these tendencies provoked large scale massacres which cul-minated in the Armenian Genocide. Two-thirds of the Armenian population numbering two million perished and the survivors form today's Armenian Diáspora. Today Armenians are locked in a long-drawn conflict with Turkey emanating from the fact that Modern Turkey denies the genocidal events and the Armenian attempts to obtain international recognition of the Armenian Genocide.
