Abstract

The article tries to evalúate the policies of memoriy developed during the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera (1923-1929) from the typical example of Barcelona. This system of governement, whose legitimacy was proble-matic, chose to organize the oblivion of the policies of memory previously practised in the city, in particular the catalanist and the republican ones. The chronology shows a marked reorientation and radicalization of the system from 1926. The dictatorship tried to impose its own monuments and public fairs, but in vain. It was more successful in the total recasting of the street's nomenclature undertaken in order to «hispanicize» the sym-bolical references. The attemps of resistance from the political groups op-posed to that way of reading of past, expressed themselves with difficulty. But the repression led them to think up new strategies to express memory, for example on the occasion of funerals or folk dances. Finally, the nationalist society knew how to find all the requisites for its survival.
