Abstract

The Communist Party, founded in June 1931, remained as the only legal organization of its type in Central America during the 1930s. The objective of this article is to examine its initial insertion into the Costa Rican political system by participating in the election of 1934, in which it had its best performance of the decade. The success of the Communist Party was the result of the combination of three factors: the role played by president Ricardo Jiménez (1932-1936) defending the electoral inclusión of the left, the low tur-nout, and the procedure to adjudícate posts, that when it was based on the proportional method, was decisively affected by low turnout.
