«Bon cop de falg!». Myths and war images in catalanist culture

Abstract

This work try to go through the different myths and militaristic sym-bols built by the Catalanist culture, valuing his alleged functionality in the different political discourses produced in the latest 150 years. The legend of Catalán almogavar's fury is re-examined, as well as the myth of «defence of the land» in the 1640 rebellion, the construction of sacrificial rites around the commemoration of September llth, 1714, the external projec-tion of the myth of militiamen in the War of África (1859-60), the contrast between pacifist discourse and popular antimilitarism, the martial expe-riences imported from abroad, and the historical and political implications of the images of the «ungovernable Catalonia» during the first third of XXth. Century, the «October revolution» of 1934, the «Catalán oasis» in the Spring 1936 ant the Civil War imposed to Catalán will in 1936-39. The essay ends with a thought about the transformation and trivialization of this aggres-sive symbols in recent times.
