Abstract

Carlism and Catalanism in the late I9h Century Catalán Nationalist circles have formulated and Consolidated some the-ses which are, to say the least, very debatable from a historical point of view. The most significant of these is the idea that Carlism was a sort of precedent of Catalán Nationalism and that, consequently, Catalán Carlists evolved towards Catalanism in a natural, logical and necessary way since the last fourth of the 19th Century. Nevertheless, as is usually the case with historical processes, reality was much less simple and more nuanced. Jordi Canal's article studies three particular cases —those of Luis M. de Llauder, Marian Vayreda, and Joan Bardina— in order to show the tense and complex relations between Carlism and Catalanism in the late 19th Century.
