t Bridginghe Gap between Elite and Mass Politics The following paper will examine the central legislative projects promoted by the Sección Feminina de la FET (the 1958 reform of the Civil Code; the 1961 law of Political and Professional Rights for Women; and the 1966 amendments of that law), and the way their implementation was monitored by the organization’s legal department. The paper will look at these legislative projects as the means for bridging the gap between the SF’s elite and mass politics — a tool through which the organization attempted to make the active and independent life style of its members accessible to larger female populations. By tying this interplay between elite and mass politics to the more general developments within Francoist society, I will show that the SF’s leadership carved for itself a place which many would have liked to deny it — that of a political elite intent on changing the social reality of Spanish women.Downloads
