Abstract

In the particular symbolic forest of radical Basque nationalism, the music plays a fundamental role in attempting to create an emotional climate functional to its goals. This work studies the public tributes made by that nationalist subcommunity to its heroes/martyrs dead in violent circumstances. Three musical pieces are analyzed in the framework of their funeral rituals: Eusko Gudariak, Agur Jaunak and Pablo Sorozábal’s Guernica. Marcha Fúnebre Vasca. The article investigates the respective origins of each composition, its purpose and the possible paradoxical uses of this element of the moral economy of the emotions stylized by the radical nationalism.
