Abstract

Women’s experience during the Spanish Civil War was not only determined by the projects imposed by the Republican and the Francoist governments, but also by the logic of «total war». The aim of the article is to analyze those elements that influenced female mobilization in both rearguards in a comparative perspective: the political organization for women’s cadres, the activities that women carried out to contribute to the war effort, as well as the different gender models built during the war. The conclusion is that female mobilization for total war had modernizing consequences for gender relations, independently of whether their respective political projects pursued female emancipation or subordination.
