Stalin’s decision to help the Spanish Republic – a controversial issue in the history of the Civil War

Abstract

The circumstances in which Stalin decided to assist the embattled Spanish Republic with war material and military advisors have remained obscure. Even the most recent historiography is still dependent on the legends spread by Walter Krivitsky in 1939. This article throws light on the tortuous process which Stalin followed until he made up his mind at the end of September 1936, two full months after Hitler and Mussolini had decided to help Franco. The reasons for Stalin´s decision were of a geopolitical and strategic nature (strengthening the policy of collective security against fascism) and had also an ideological bent (to maintain the Soviet leadership of the international proletariat movement and to intensify the struggle against).
