Las raíces intelectuales del conservadurismo americano.

Over the last thirty years, the USA has witnessed the appearance of a conservative political formula that has governed the country for twenty of the years between 1980 and 2007. This conservative movement is something new that has substituted earlier political forces that used to fight to govern by dominating the «vital centre». This article traces the set of ideas that have served as its foundations, analysing the theories of some of its most influential thinkers. It argues that the conservative movement comprises two basic tendencies (social conservatism and libertarianism) inspired by contradictory theses. It also analyses the mechanisms that have enabled these two disjointed sets to be set within policy solutions acceptable to a wide sector of American society. It notes possible fault-lines along which the current unity could break down.Downloads
