Abstract

This article shows how the European liberal and populist right wing responded to the political crisis of the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st centuries. The diversity of proposals forthcoming between the triumph of Margaret Thatcher and that of Nicholas Sarkozy reflects the diversity of right-wing political traditions in each of the countries considered (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK). However, these traditions also share a common factor: a desire to make a clean break, to adapt to a new political cycle. The article looks at radical change understood as regeneration, populism as the backdrop for a show of sovereignty and national identities, new forms of leadership. All these should be considered within the specific conditions of each country and as part of a model for changing the political and social cycle in Western Europe.
