Abstract

After the end of Franco's dictatorship, the Spanish right-wing movements entered into a deep crisis. It was not just the success of the transition to democracy, with residual support for the extreme right and a minority support for Franco-flavoured reforms. It was also that a culture associated for nearly four decades with authoritarianism, repression and national-Catholicism had lost its credibility. As of the end of the eighties, several right-wing splinter groups, in particular those associated to new liberal conservatism, initiated their political and cultural recovery in a favourable international context. Their aim was to construct a cultural project that could compete with what was seen as a left-wing hegemony, to prepare the ground for the political triumph of the People's Party in civil society. This was done with the help of a significant number of intellectuals coming from left-wing backgrounds, for whom the issue of a single Spain was decisive. This issue was a key to the building of the conservative ideological edifice.
