Abstract

The article begins with a study of the fundamental elements behind the economic progress of the most developed countries in today’s world: respect for private property rights and free markets. It then considers how the right-wing economy evolved under Franco’s non-democratic regime and the democratic centre-right government of the UCD. Spain industrialised during the fifties and sixties; however, its development did not bring any more freedoms, which meant high growth rates were accompanied by high inefficiency. And during the political transition from 1977 to 1982, the UCD successfully managed an economy in crisis, its varied range of reforms laying the foundations for the spectacular economic performance Spain has recorded over the last twentyfive years.
