Abstract

The study of Tocqueville’s Memoirs on Pauperism is used by the author as an opportunity to highlight the importance of the idea of pauperism in the 19th century. The possibilities this concept offers for a better interpretation of the relationship between poverty, work and assistance as it was constructed at the time are also explored. From this perspective a more accomplished understanding of the limits and capabilities of the system of assistance in the 19th century is possible.
