Abstract

This article analyses the implication that the kind of «Catholic Agustinism» known as Jansenism had on the formation of a set of ethics centred around self-interest. It starts with a more general investigation into the passions throughout the Spanish-speaking world at the end of the 18th century, focusing on the arguments triggered by the works of Pierre Nicole. We believe that this article can also help us to understand how a «commercial society» was conceived within a structurally Catholic monarchy and what the representatives of the Hispanic Enlightenment could borrow from it.
