Abstract

This article provides a critical analysis of Cinco Regimes na Politica Internacional, the latest book by the historian and politician, José Medeiros Ferreira. In it, the man who was Foreign Minister for Portugal at the end of the 1970’s analyses his country’s foreign policy and the influence on its approach of successive regime changes in Portugal during the 20th century. The internal policy situation changed repeatedly, yet in general lines, this did not have much impact on how foreign policy was designed. This conclusion leads Medeiros Ferreira to analyse the influence of other factors, such as the international situation, Portugal’s relationship with other countries, the colonial issue and the process of constructing the European Union.
