Abstract

The recent appearance of several books on Spanish nationalism in the current democracy leads us to note the maturity reached in Spanish social science and historiography in analysing this specific strand of contemporary politics and society. Spanish nationalism, in the light of this and other publications, is no longer an unknown phenomenon in the history of Spain. However, a careful analysis of this new bibliography also reflects that, as is habitual in Spanish academic circles, theoretical fashions are too easily taken up with rather deficient empirical research and very weak theoretical reflection. These fashions also have the suspicious virtue of facilitating partial insights and tend to award mythical proportions to the assumed reality of this phenomenon in today’s Spain.
