Abstract

At the end of the 19th century, a justification of individual attacks was disseminated in anarchist circles in terms of propaganda through action: The impact of the attacks in the media turned them into an efficient means of putting out revolutionary propaganda. The concept began to be used at the end of the seventies and in 1881 was taken up by the international anarchists’ congress held in London. However, there were few anarchist attacks in the eighties. The new tactic did not become popular until its efficacy as a propaganda tool was demonstrated by a chain of attacks committed in France between 1892 and 1894. This essay is based on the anarchist press of the time and the French police reports. It reconstructs the birth of propaganda through action.
