Abstract

The starting point in this article is tolerance. This fundamental idea of modern thought is at the foundations of liberalism and its theoretical constructs and institutional reflections, articulating how people live together within constitutional systems. The contemporary understanding of tolerance links into the Rawlsian idea of public reason and similar ideas, and it is at the heart of the debate about the requirements and restrictions that institutions may permissibly impose upon argument. formulations of these restrictions is driven by an idea of respect, sometimes more explicitly than others. This is present in arguments denying the need for any kind of restriction. links that the different parties to the debate have established between the idea of respect and other values define divergent ideas of society and personal rights. At the same time, they configure different ideas of tolerance.
