Abstract

The political stability achieved by the Regeneration system in Portugal makes it possible to consider the process initiated in 1851 as a model of liberal reconciliation. The new rules it laid down obliged the political forces to re-group (the Regenerators and the Historicals) in order to adapt to the new space in which the political battle would be played out and reformulate their respective political identities. initiatives for reconciliation taken by the Unión Liberal in Spain during O’Donnell’s long government, following the experience of the two years of progressive governments (el Bienio), tried to adopt a strategy of constituting a third party at the cost of the traditional parties, both of which were bogged down in their own internal crises. However, it did not reach its goals, as the Moderates and Progressives undermined the calls to reconciliation made by the Unionists and put themselves forward as the alternative power.
