Abstract

It is not necessary to look for reasons to justify our interest in one of the most complex topics in the history of Modern Spain. At the beginning of the 21st century the Spanish emigrant may be a distant image in Spanish society, which gives good reason for an historical assessment. Historians, using the tools from social sciences, appear in privileged position to analyze an historical phenomenon such as external emigration. The aim of this manuscript is to raise possible venues for future research in our historical knowledge of Spanish emigration starting from the belief that it is necessary to overcome the traditional division into different periods usually found in the literature. The article presents some of the problems that could be reconsidered once Spanish emigration is globally analyzed. In addition, the negative effects derived from the lack of academic dialog among different disciplines are also stressed.
