Abstract

In this article we suggest, in the first place, that in the second half of the eighteenth century the Chilean creole elite enjoyed high degrees of administrative autonomy. This autonomy helped the vecinos to defend their rights and prerogatives in a corporative way. Secondly, we discuss the different scenarios in which the creoles defended their interests in relation to the Chilean governor, Francisco Antonio García Carrasco. Thirdly, we study the creation of the national Junta of September 18, 1810, and the political changes that its conformation brought about in Chilean society. The last section analyzes how the Junta planned a defensive system in 1810 and which was its role in the configuration of the frontiers of the Chilean territory.
