Abstract

This article analyzes the import and marketing of printed materials conducted by the Communist Party of Costa Rica (CPCR) between 1931 and 1948. Unlike other such organizations in Latin America, that had the resources necessary to translate and publish locally the works written by leading theorists and politicians Communist, the CPCR, due to its small size, depended crucially on imports. This situation forced the CPCR to implement various business strategies to ensure financial sustainability of that activity (a process not without tensions). Indeed, the responsibility for acquiring imported and expensive printed materials increased financial pressure on the militants and sympathizers of the CPCR. Most of these people were workers and peasants with limited purchasing power, who were being affected by the difficulties that characterized the Costa Rican economy in the 1930s and 1940s.
