THE WORKS OF THE GENERAL STATISTICAL COMMITTEE (1856-1870) IN THE TOPOGRAPHICAL AND CADASTRAL FIELDS

Abstract

Between 1856 and 1870 the Spanish State understook the drawing up of a cadnstral survey. An ambitious project it itself, it was, until 1866, tied in with doing a topographical map of the country. The project required a vast human and economic effort. To this end, the Junta General de Estadística was created in 1861 to bring together under its aegis surveyors, geodesic experts and engravers. Though the cadestic survey was itself abandoned, the effort that went into it gave rise to much cartographic output. This in turn was the foundation on which a future.Instituto Geográfico' was to rise. The material gathered for the general cadastral survey also went towards the drawing up of city maps.
