Abstract

Over the last few years, dock areas have evolved from being unwanted, unfilled spaces in urban development plans, and are now considered as highly desirable areas for solving those problems that arise from a lack of public areas in the cities in which they are to found. The restructuring of dock areas as a result of urban pressure, in conjuction with the new demands of maritime transport, has made essential the establishment of a dialogue between ports ans cities which is up to bringing together the demands of both sides. In this article, the author has endeavoured to analyse the factors which have led to the present situation, the difficulties arising from the dialogue between ports and cities and the conditions which would bring about a balanced solution to existing tensions.
