Abstract

The paper, beginning by adjusting itself to the task of commenting the zonal impact of the '92 Olympics in a scientific manner, goes on to examine the odd fact of the Olympic Village's being sited in an area long (since the 18C and the building of the Citadel there) held to be accursed. This notwithstanding, it is pointed out that the site in fact enjoys —and always did— an outstanding view of the beaches and coastline of the City of Barcelona. This sane accursedness so deformed the growth in size of the city that it altered its maritime nature from the Middle Ages —albeit relunctantly— and bent itself to that model that the last two centuries have known, namely a proud spread towards the West, that is, inlandwards. The paper thus sees the building of the Olympic Village at Poblenou as the breaking of this "curse" upon the city's development and thus as the first step towards a new structuring and then from for this.
