Abstract

Currently, we are witnessing the comeback of the tram in European cities. The indiscriminate use of
the private car and its negative effects (economic, social and environmental) are at the core of this
movement of recovery of a classic urban transport mode. In this paper, a detailed analysis of the
situation at a European level is made, and the conclusion is that the functionality of the tram shows a
significant diversity. Broadly speaking, we can say that in Northern Europe tram is intended to address
specific problems of population mobility. In Southern Europe (without prejudice to the former function),
the tram is seen primarily as a tool for the rehabilitation of the city, deeply associated with an image
updating and the renovation effect it causes.
