Abstract

The paper is an attempt to determine the built unit cost per m2 of different sorts of housing construction in
order to establish how this varies for small structures. It lays out the method used for doing so and the
variables in this born in mind and then the three types of building - detached, terraced and flats, these last
with various sizes of block, types of access, stairway and ground plan being considered. To come at the unit
price, various parts of the work in-put are delineated, namely earth shifting, foundations, structuring,
enclosing, finish and installations, special emphasis being given here to structuring and the alternative ways
that this might be designed ad undertaken and their impact on the final unit price. The object of the paper
is to offer a tool for measuring the cost effectiveness of design decisions.
