Abstract

This article examines how the continuous promotion of free-market homeownership, as a central element of an asset-based housing system, influences the current housing access crisis in Spain. To this end, a quantitative analysis is applied, complemented by geoprocessing techniques, which evaluates changes in housing access conditions for young people in the city of Madrid in the period 2010-2022. The results reveal how the new real estate cycle, characterized by private investment in rental housing and a scarce supply, has aggravated the housing squeeze experienced by young people. This has led to a displacement of this population, mainly towards the southern periphery, further exacerbating their residential exclusion and existing socio-spatial disparities.
