The challenge of social housing in the face of the Spanish residential emergency

Spain is currently experiencing a genuine social emergency manifested by the difficulty in accessing housing, especially for low-income households, young people forming their first household, and immigrants. Given the existing needs, the housing production system faces a territorially unbalanced shortage, burdened by the consequences of the 2008 crisis. The resulting housing shortage, which is particularly evident in the rental market, which lower-income households must turn to. This situation is driving a substantial increase in social, economic, generational, and territorial inequalities, which could slow the economic growth and require long-term coordination between the various administrative levels.
