The territorial system of the huerta and its landscape and heritage valuation: the case of Nerja, Málaga

The occupation of the territory dates back to the
appearance of the first settlements where land
work generated initial territorial structures, many
of which have been preserved to the present day,
giving rise to a valuable legacy of complex spatial
landscape systems. Within the framework of current
studies on agriculture as a configurator of the
built environment, this article presents a territorial
approach to the huerta from the perspective of
the heritage value of agricultural activity. To this
end, the research focuses on the case of Nerja, on
the Mediterranean coast of Malaga, a town whose
historical and morphological evolution has been
closely linked to fruit and vegetable production
activity. For the first time, this study focuses on the
singularity of the huerta through a methodology that
combines documental, cartographic and normative
studies.
